William Edward McCarty, age 81 of Pearland, Texas, where he had lived for four years, formerly of Houston, and Alvin passed away Monday, September 25, 2023, at his residence in Pearland. William was born on September 3, 1942, in San Angelo, Texas. He proudly served his country in Alaska during the Vietnam era in the United States Army Corps of Engineers as Specialist Four USAR. and later in the Army reserves in Austin, Texas While in the army he attended classes at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

William was preceded in death by his parents, William Eudell and Rita Sanford McCarty. And many other relatives and friends.

William is survived by his wife Cynthia Hoyt McCarty, son Wray E. McCarty and wife Huong, daughter, Rhonda Berkman and husband Cary, sister-in-law Ellen Hoyt, 9 grandchildren, Misti, Trina, Kasi, Wryan, Anna, Daniel, Stacy, Shelaine, Ashleigh, 19 great-grandchildren, 2 great great-grandchildren, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

He started out, when a teenager, working jobs with his father as a carpenter. When he was discharged from the Army he worked for the Texas Hwy Dept in Austin Texas as a draftsman. He then came to the Gulf Coast region working as a Piping designer and non-degreed mechanical, chemical engineer who understood all aspects of refinery and petrochemical plants for Dow Chemical and may other companies. He met his second wife Cynthia at Amoco Oil Refinery in Texas City, Texas in 1983.

William had done many different activities in his life, but snow skiing was his passion which he learned while in Alaska.

He retired in 2013 and his last job before retirement he was at Chocolate Bayou Petro Chemical complex south of Alvin Texas for 27 years as a Design Engineering Supervisor. The men and women that worked with him held him in high regard. As they went on to other jobs, many said it was a special place and nothing could compare to the experience they had at Chocolate because of him.

The family wish to thank the hospice caregivers and nurses that took care of him in his final weeks. In of lieu of flowers donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

A visitation will be held Monday, October 2, 2023, from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Scott Funeral Home in Alvin, Texas. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 10:00 am at Scott Funeral Home in Alvin, Texas. Interment will follow in the Houston National Cemetery, Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 11:30 AM.
