Merlin Eugene "Gene" Shaner, age 78, of Alvin, Texas, formerly from Newark, Delaware, was born on June 5, 1943 in Athens, Ohio, passed away September 16, 2021 in Harbor Hospice House of Houston,  Houston, Texas, son of the late Laurence Merlin Shaner and Wilma Arlene (Taylor) Shaner Lazartic.

He was a resident of Alvin, Texas for 40-1/2 years.  Gene retired from Amoco T&D, Chocolate Bayou, Alvin, Texas in July 1997 as a truck driver.  He is a member of the Grigsby Society and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), Bernardo de Galvez #1 Chapter, Galveston, Texas.  Gene has six ancestors who fought in the American Revolution.  He was a golf marshal for 28 years at Bayou Golf Course, Texas City, Texas and enjoyed playing golf at various golf courses.  He enjoyed making quilts.  He was a member of three Quilt Guilds.

Gene is preceded in death by his parents, his children's mother Georgia (Dunn) Shaner, and great-grandson Andre Cox.

Gene is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marsha (Timko) Redman Shaner; children: Jacqueline (Shaner) Cox, Virginia Shaner, Ronald Shaner, Victoria Shaner, Patricia (Redman) Gonzales (John), and Michael Redman (Jennifer); 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.  Brothers, Gary Shaner (Sherrie) and Greg Shaner; and sisters Vickie (Shaner) Tackett and Tammy (Shaner) Pallo; along with numerous other relatives and friends.

Gene wishes are to be cremated.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.
