Maria Hockin, age 87 of Alvin, Texas passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021 in Galveston, Texas. Maria was born January 14, 1934 in Germany, and was a resident of Alvin for 61 years. She is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Robert Hockin, parents, Marta and Karl Nowak, and twin brother, Hermann Nowak.

Maria is survived by her daughters, Christine Hockin-Boyd and husband Larry, Sonja Hockin, sister, Renate Cox and husband Stan, granddaughters, Crystal Santos, Bridget Byrd, along with numerous other relatives and dear friends.

Known for her great care of her family, Maria was an excellent homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, and always on the lookout for someone to put a jig saw puzzle together with her. And of course, being Robert's right hand on working on whatever project was needed in the workshop, around the house, on the mission field, or in the Church Resource Room. Maria loved working with her hands as it supported her family, church, and God's mission.

Maria became a Christian at an early age committing her life to the Lord. She loved missions and participated on many trips to Mexico building churches and distributing collections of food, crafts, clothing, educational materials, medicine, bibles, and her famous Christmas stockings. She was known to work and collect year-round items to deliver on these trips.

Maria was spiritually strong, and one would find him/her self-sharing prayer concerns knowing she would listen, encourage, and pray for you. She would remind you of God's care and love for you.

Believing in education, Maria was a lifelong learner. She loved history, music, reading, and was a news buff. She enjoyed volunteering at the schools, tutoring children in their reading knowing the good it would produce in their education.

Maria never met a stranger. And when you encountered her, you quickly realized this was a person that truly cared and wanted the best for you. She gave the best hugs and appreciated a firm handshake. You could always expect that if you missed church one week, she would find you and inquire where you were because she missed you.

As Maria was well known for her amazing Church Resource Room, the family invites memorial gifts to support the ongoing efforts ensuring teachers are equipped with various resources and tools for bible teaching. A memorial visitation will be held from 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM Friday, November 5, 2021 at South Park Baptist Church in Alvin with a memorial service starting at 11:00 AM.
