Karen Denise Mavus, age 79 of Alvin, Texas passed away Thursday, December 11, 2025, at a personal care home in Friendswood, Texas. Karen was born November 14, 1946, in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. She was a resident of Alvin for the last two years, formerly a longtime resident of Spring, Texas. She is preceded in death by her husband, Richard Mavus; parents, Charles and Helen Colwell Jr.; and brother, Roger Colwell.

Karen is survived by her; son, Brian Mavus and wife Irma; daughter, Kim Bigham and husband Chuck; grandchildren, Kira Bigham, Dusty Gonzales, Dominic Gonzales, Demetrio Gonzales, Delores Veal, Darlene Sandoval and Lyndsay Strain; 18 great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; along with numerous extended family and friends.

Karen spent her adult life as a Registered Nurse.  She graduated from Englewood Hospital Nursing School in 1967 and worked as a nurse in many capacities until 2014.  Karen really enjoyed taking care of people, and along the way, she met many wonderful people, both co-workers and patients that made a positive impact on her life. During the last few months, she was surrounded by the wonderful hospice nurses who always called her Nurse Mavus!

The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you Maria and Ali, from Maria's Loving Hands, who helped take care of Karen in her last few months. We would also like to send thanks to the many hospice nurses and other social workers who helped make Karen's life comfortable and happy. A very special thanks to Meagan, Rosalyn, Melissa, Marian and Haley.

A Memorial Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Saturday, January 3, 2026, at Scott Funeral Home with a Memorial Service beginning at 11:00 AM.
