Edith Elizabeth Steans, age 93 of Manvel, Texas, passed away Saturday, June 10, 2023. Edith was born on September 4, 1929, in Anderson, Indiana. Edith enjoyed playing golf, bowling and roller skating. She traveled across the United States with children and pets in tow. She was an advocate for equal rights for all people regardless of age, race, or religion. She worked for the Urban League of Anderson Indiana, Chief Juvenile Probation Officer for Madison County. Ms. Steans was appointed as the Affirmative Action Officer for the State of Indiana by Governor Bowen and continued this role at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

She held a master's degree in Sociology with a minor in Criminal Justice. She taught at part-time at Anderson University and encouraged everyone to continue education for lifelong learning.

Edith is preceded in death by her sisters, Mildred Downing, Alyce Lucas, and Betty Anderson; brothers James E. Downing and William "Billy" Downing.

Edith is survived by her daughters Judith Rene Steans and Carol Elizabeth Steans; sons Bruce Alvin Steans and wife Johanna, and Stacy Theodore Steans and wife Cecelia; sister Mary Catherine Watkins; grandchildren Matthew, Jason, Jessica, Melinda, Marisa, Russell, and Maria; greatgrandchildren Demetrius, Vanessa, Shawn, and Alexis; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a Silver Star member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated Mu Kappa Omega Chapter.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM Monday, June 19, 2023, at Scott Funeral Home with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manvel, Texas. Interment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery.
