Durwood Nelson Sanders, age 90 of Alvin, Texas, passed away Friday, December 15, 2023.  Durwood was born September 27, 1933, in Huntsville, Texas, and was a member of the Alvin community for 56 years. Durwood is preceded in death by his parents Nelson and Genia Sanders; sisters Nelda Daughtie and Geneva Walling; brother Charles Ray Sanders; and grandchild Tyler Sanders.

Durwood is survived by his wife of 57 years Shirley Sanders; sons David Sanders and wife Ginger, and Joe Don Sanders and wife Nancy; sisters Norma Ault, Joyce Hollis, and Charlotte Stewart; grandchildren Corey Sanders, Kylee Crawford, Kyndel Hays, and Dylan Sanders.

After graduating from Huntsville High School, Durwood served in the United States Marine Corp. eventually being stationed in Hawaii.  His professional career as an operations specialist spanned 40 years in the petrochemical industry working in Pasadena and Alvin. He enjoyed spending time with his family, coaching youth sports and fishing in Galveston Bay with Shirley.  He was an active member of Alvin Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years.

A visitation will be from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM Friday, December 22, 2023, at Alvin Missionary Baptist Church. Following the visitation, a funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Durwood's honor to Alvin Missionary Baptist Church.
