Don Powell, age 83 passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2022. He was the son of the late Byron and Hazel Powell of Ralls, Texas. Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Connie; daughters, Donnell Gilbreath, Shelly (Steve) Kelly, and Niki (Greg) Samuel; grandchildren, Chelsi Powell, Brennan (Jessica) Frantz, Kiele Samuel, Harley and Cole Kelly, Emily (Cameron) Hartsell, Maggie (Dr. Cliff) Kerby, Katie (Charlie) Burford; great grandchildren, Grayson, Gretta Von, Payton, Charlie, Breckin, Sam, Grace, Tucker, Annie, William, and Molly with one on the way. Don is preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Hazel Powell; brothers, Elvis and Melvin Powell; and grandson, Blaine Gilbreath. Born in Floyd County, Don grew up in Ralls, Texas where his family attended Emma Church of Christ. Don grew up farming and ranching alongside his father. He went on to continue farming in Crosby County for 35 years where he meticulously farmed over 4,000 acres. After becoming a pilot in 1973, Don restored and flew a North American AT6 in Confederate Air Force shows throughout Texas. Don owned and trained quarter horses ultimately competing in the National Cutting Horse Futurity in Fort Worth, Texas. Following Don's retirement from farming, Don and Connie moved to Austin, Texas. In Austin, Don embraced city life in using his entrepreneurial spirit combined with his farm life work ethic and cut out a totally new business endeavor with the start of Sno-Beach! Sno-Beach became a popular hot spot in the summer, employing many of whom have become lifelong friends. To the employees, he was a friend, employer, and mentor, so much so that one of his employees purchased Sno-Beach and named one of her children Powell. While Don and Connie were in Austin, they were members of Westover Hills Church of Christ. Don took refreshments to bible class every Sunday morning where he convinced all of the elderly he had made everything himself. After 20 years of running Sno-Beach, at 73, Don decided to retire for a second time, moving to Friendswood, Texas to enjoy the activities of his youngest grandchildren. His most recent employment was for his son in law, Steve Kelly, for Houston Shoe Hospital, where he was given the endearing name, "Pops" by dozens of employees. His love for that position motivated him to faithfully work for Steve until the week before his death. Don and Connie have been blessed to worship at Pearland Church of Christ for the last several years. Don continued his enjoyment of bringing refreshments to bible study. His confidence in death came from his faith in the Lord and knowledge that his entire family are baptized believers in Christ Jesus.
