Demetrio "Wayo" Gonzales, age 87 of Charlotte, TX, passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2024 surrounded by his family. Demetrio was born on December 22, 1936, in Tilden, TX and was a resident of Alvin for over 60 years. He worked as a chemical operator at Lowe Chemical for more than 20 years then retired from Alvin Independent School District after working for many years in the maintenance department.

In addition to being a husband and father, Wayo was the lead singer and bajo sexto player of the Tejano Conjunto band Los Canarios. Wayo, his cousin "Charro", and his brother "Cuco" played their music at dances for all occasions around the greater Houston and San Antonio areas. Los Canarios was a family operation. While different family members rotated through the band on the drums, Wayo's wife Geneva and their children would record the show on cassette tapes, wrote down set lists, lyrics, and would dance.

Wayo was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He enjoyed listening to and playing music, spending time with his family at the beach, playing intense volleyball games, and caring for his horses and cattle at the ranch he shared with his wife in Jourdanton, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Geneva Gonzales, his parents, Jesusa and Pablo Gonzales, his daughter, Eva Lopez, his son, Paul Gonzales, and his grandson, Henry Palomarez Jr.

Demetrio is survived by his daughters, Stella Palomarez and husband Henry Sr., Esther Salinas and husband Genaro Sr., Cindy Tellez and husband Mario Sr., son, Demetrio Gonzales, Jr., 18 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, 2 great-granddogs, 6 great great-grandchildren, as well as numerous other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at Scott Funeral Home with a Rosary being recited at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Thursday, December 5, 2024, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church inAlvin.
